This project encompassed the detailed design, equipment manufacturing, on-site installation, system commissioning, and overall project management of the MRT flood protection bulkhead gate system. Nan Dao Engineering assisted the MRT bureaus in establishing a remote gate control system at the Operations Control Centre (OCC) and Passenger Assistance Office (PAO), enabling real-time monitoring of the open/closed status of bulkhead gates at each station and enhancing automated surveillance and emergency response capability. The system also incorporates a safety interlock mechanism linked to MRT train operations, ensuring that gates are only activated once trains have reached a safe position, thereby guaranteeing safe train movement at all times. Typhoon Nari in 2001 severely damaged the Taipei MRT, with floodwater breaching multiple lines and causing extensive disruption that took months to fully restore — exposing a critical vulnerability in the underground network's flood resilience against extreme weather events. In the aftermath, Nan Dao Engineering worked closely with the MRT operator on technical studies, conducting repeated assessments and verifications of flood countermeasures for tunnel structures at fault zones, river-crossing sections, and other areas prone to water ingress. Drawing on the concept of submarine watertight compartments, a full cross-section flood protection bulkhead gate system solution was jointly developed. As the majority of MRT tracks and stations are constructed underground, any structural damage or seepage caused by typhoons, heavy rainfall, or earthquakes could not only disrupt train operations but also propagate through interchange stations across the network, resulting in catastrophic consequences. Based on the outcomes of joint technical studies with the MRT operator, bulkhead gates were installed at critical sections including fault zones and river-crossing segments. In the event of flooding, the system confines water ingress to a localised area, significantly reducing the impact of disasters and safeguarding tunnel structures, station equipment, and passenger safety. The flood protection bulkhead gate system delivered by Nan Dao Engineering serves as the last line of defence in the MRT flood protection framework — a role that has firmly established the company's expertise and professional standing in the field of MRT system protection.
Nan Dao Engineering provides ongoing support to the MRT operator in conducting annual pre-flood season emergency drill tests, verifying that every bulkhead gate can be reliably opened and closed under emergency conditions. The gates are integrated with the remote control system at the Operations Control Centre, enabling instant compartmentalisation of deep underground tunnels upon activation and containing flood ingress to the minimum possible extent — making the system an indispensable last line of defence in the MRT flood protection framework.
